On January 13th, SPNN’s Set It Up crew took a field trip to the Minnesota Museum of American Art to meet Julie Buffalohead, an artist whose exhibit “Coyote Dreams” was on display. Buffalohead took us on a tour of the exhibit, talking about her artwork and some of the themes it addresses – from Native culture, to motherhood, to feeling of not fitting in. At the end of our visit, Buffalohead gave us a prompt for a photo project that we could work on in Set It Up: “The Playfulness of Childhood.”

After meeting with mentors to brainstorm ideas around this theme, each Set It Up member submitted a photo project in response to the exhibit. In turn, the Minnesota Museum of American Art generously offered to have large format prints made of the photographs, and is exhibiting them in their space through April. This is the first time we’ve done a project quite like this, and we are incredible excited and grateful to the MMAA and Julie Buffalohead for their support.

The Minnesota Museum of American Art is located on the corner of 4th and Robert Streets in St. Paul. The space is open to the public Thursdays from 11:00am-6:00pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am-4:00pm. The Set It Up photographs will be on display through mid-April.
